Bizarre Plays

Produced by

Date:  22nd February 2025 at 8.00pm

Three productions chosen from our submitted collection, chosen for their unusual topics, that lead us off the beaten track and onwards to something new. We are hoping to provide a night that will lead you to think about things in a different light.

A bit about the chosen Plays:

Wheat is What we Eat, The War on Emus
Written And directed by Mick Francis.
Based on the true events in the 1930s in Western Australia, when the military attempted to repel 20,000 emus from fresh wheat crops planted by clueless farmers. The emus won the war. The setting for this dark comedy is a courtroom where three humans are on trial, judged by an impatient emu, Judge Moody and her trigger-happy sidekick, Chief Birdman, who is half emu and half man (long story). The play features original music, historical footage from the war, and lots of weird and wonderful twists. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
The Fox
Written by Lauren Blakeway
Directed by Edward Gray
A two hander set in an old gentleman’s apartment. Kara is a night care assistant, enduring the restraints of a capitalist society whilst battling depression. When Kara meets Henry, her unusual new client, her world is turned upside down. Does the path to freedom and happiness always appear extraordinary?
The Three Stages of Monica
Written by Benjamin Peel
Directed by Kevin Foott
Three short interlinked plays delve into the mysterious life of Monica as she experiences strange goings on in a dressing room, a restaurant and finally a waiting room for perhaps the ultimate interview. Switching between comedy, surrealism and drama the stakes are continually raised as both Monica and the audience try to work out what is happening. Is it real, is she in purgatory and can she escape the cycle?
