Suffering from atypical anorexia, 21 year old Riley pieces together her experience through fragmented diary entries. As hidden truths begin to surface, the story becomes more direct, revealing the impact her illness has on her relationships with her mum, friends, and family. Through honest storytelling, Bite offers an insight into the quiet thoughts and behaviours that slowly consume a person.
Based on a true story, each scene is inspired by real diary entries, and what starts as a non-chronological sequence gradually becomes more linear as Riley confronts the reality of her illness.
Bite focuses on atypical anorexia, an eating disorder that carries the same mental illness, behaviours, and risks as anorexia, but without the stereotype of someone being underweight. Alongside its focus on the mental illness side of anorexia, Bite also explores the misunderstanding surrounding atypical anorexia and the damaging impact those misconceptions can have on relationships, treatment, and self-perception.
